Generals History

Stoney Creek hockey history is defined by a strong tradition of junior and senior competitive teams, most notably the Warriors (1974–2013) and the Senior AAA Generals/Tigers (2013–present). The town has also fostered a robust girls' hockey program, the Stoney Creek Sabres, established in 1973.

Key Historical Teams and Milestones:

  • Stoney Creek Warriors (Junior): Formed in 1974 in the Niagara & District Junior C League, winning four titles before moving to the Golden Horseshoe Junior B league in 1989. The team rebranded as the Spirit (1993–2001) before returning to the Warriors name, winning the 2009 Golden Horseshoe championship and reaching the Sutherland Cup final. The team was sold and relocated to Ancaster in 2013.
  • Stoney Creek Generals/Tigers (Senior): Joining the Allan Cup Hockey League in 2013, the team became a powerhouse, winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup (league championship) four consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2019. Formerly known as the Hamilton Steelhawks/Steelers, they became the Stoney Creek Tigers in 2023, winning the 2023 championship.
  • Stoney Creek Girls Hockey (Sabres): Founded in 1973 as the Saltfleet Women's Hockey Association (later SCGHA). The Sabres have grown from a small house league into a premier association, with the U18 Sabres competing for national titles like the Esso Cup.
  • New Developments: As of April 1, 2026, a new Junior franchise, the Stoney Creek Generals, was announced to join the Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOJHL) in the Eastern Conference.
